Cambria's first flight went more beautifully than could have been expected. Cam fell asleep in her car seat before we even got into the car so we had a quiet drive to the Oakland airport. Thanks for the ride Auntie Ames.
Unfortunately, they make you take your baby out of the car seat at security (a policy created by someone who has never been a parent), so Cam woke up and was none too happy. I think now that the timing was fortuitous, however, because she was awake for the hour and a half we waited for our flight, and then zonked out in the sling just before we boarded.
Just before take off, the flight attendant informed me that I would need to take my sleeping child out of the sling before the flight took off. (Another policy made by a single non-parent.) She informed me that the policy was created because if she is in the sling and we had an abrupt stop I would crush my baby. Tell me how having her in the sling is less safe than holding her in my arms? Anyhow, I ended up having Joel scoot the sling strap over my head and just held her in my arms for the rest of the flight where she slept like... well... a baby.
Thanks to Frontier airlines, I had a water and Joel had three beers. Cam awoke just as we started to descend, so she nursed the whole way down without a squawk. As we deboarded, the man behind us commented that he had complained more on this flight than our little girl had. Nice Work Cambria Belle!
Cam ended up sleeping nearly the entire day. We arrived in Portland and she took another 3 hour nap while we had lunch. When it came to bedtime I think the stimulation of the day culminated in one unhappy little girl. She was a little harder to put down. Eventually, I tucked her arm back into the swaddle - we have been leaving one arm out lately - and laid down with her on my chest where she proceeded to sleep for 6 1/2 hours! This is the longest she has slept in her entire life and in a related story I slept for 6 1/2 consecutive hours, the longest I have slept in her life. She awoke a very happy baby and is napping nicely today. Good sleep breeds good sleep.
Now, we're in Portland with Auntie Jen and two less than happy felines - the baby has invaded their space with a whole new scent, most likely the homeless man urine scent from her diaper is disconcerting them.
I got some sleep and now feel like I can take on the world!
